Frequently asked questions.

01.

Speech Pathology

When should I see a Speech Pathologist?

If you have concerns with your child’s speech or language skills it is recommended that you seek out assistance immediately. Research has shown that early intervention is the best way to support the development of children with developmental delays, autism, or disability.

It would be good to see a speech pathologist if:

  • Your child has difficulties understanding others and following instructions.
  • Your child is difficult to understand.
  • Your child has difficulty telling you what is on their mind and explaining complex ideas.
  • Your child stutters.
  • Your child is having difficulties eating.
  • Your child is having difficulty reading or writing.

How long will my child need therapy?

The length of treatment varies depending on the amount of therapy, consistency of home practice and your child’s individual strengths and difficulties. It is hard to estimate without getting to know you, your child and your goals. It is important to note that Speech Therapy is not a quick fix and will take time and commitment to achieve positive results.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

No, you do not need a referral from a doctor to see a speech pathologist. However, if you wish to receive Medicare rebates for Speech Pathology sessions, you will need to talk to your doctor regarding a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (see below).

Are sessions covered by Medicare or Private Health Insurance?

There are options available to support your child’s access to speech pathology sessions. You can use Medicare, Private Health funding or National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to pay for sessions in our clinic.
Your child may be eligible to access the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan. This entitles you to 5 rebates for speech pathology sessions per year through Medicare. This plan is provided by a General Practitioner, so please discuss it with your doctor.
Private health insurance often includes Speech Pathology as an “extra” or “ancillary” cover option. The amount and coverage differ from each insurance fund and the quality of the plan. We recommend you contact your health fund directly to learn more about your specific level of coverage.

How often should I do speech therapy?

It depends on your condition. Our consultant will advice based on their diagnosis of your condition.

Can we do therapy outside of the clinic?

Yes. We offer therapy sessions in our clinic in Mascot but also can travel for sessions in schools, day-cares, homes and within the community. We do charge for required travel time

Can I use NDIS funding for music therapy?

Yes! Music therapy is an approved NDIS allied health support. Music therapy can be funded through the NDIS under the “Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living.”

Do I need to be musical in order to participate in music therapy?

No, you do not need a referral from a doctor to see a speech pathologist. However, if you wish to receive Medicare rebates for Speech Pathology sessions, you will need to talk to your doctor regarding a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (see below).

What should I expect in music therapy?

Each session will vary for each individual. The session may include singing, playing musical instruments, dancing, song writing, and music listening. The duration of the sessions are 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the needs of each client.

03.

Telehealth Therapy

Can I meet with a therapist without coming to your office?

Yes! We offer telehealth therapy as an option to all of our clients. As long as you have a reliable internet connection, you can meet with your therapist “virtually,” from the comfort of your home.

How does telehealth therapy work?

Instead of meeting your therapist in their office, you’ll meet via video conferencing software. You and your therapist will schedule a time to meet virtually, then your therapist will send you a link to join the video call. When you click on the link, you’ll see your therapist appear on your screen, and your session will progress as it would in-person.
