Music & Speech Telehealth Therapy
Telehealth Therapy
Following the isolation that resulted from the pandemic’s social distancing, online options have become more popular than ever. Online communication is more convenient and cost-effective for households with internet access.
When it comes to therapy, online options also provide more privacy. Nobody has to know you’re seeing a therapist. And although we should all put in the effort to end mental health stigma in Australia, anonymity helps more people seek help. Good outcome, by all means.
However, many people are still sceptical. Is telehealth therapy as good as people say it is? Is it ethical and safe? Let’s explore these questions.
Does Telehealth Provide the Same Quality as Face-to-Face Therapy?
Face-to-face therapy sessions have been around for decades. They have been carefully and extensively studied, and the practice has been perfected. How do we know that online telehealth is as effective? How are we sure that it doesn’t have any negative effects on the therapeutic process?
First, although there have not been decades of study, the studies that have been done were thorough. They also yielded positive results. Studies in 2020 and 2022 have shown that telehealth is just as effective, and in some cases even more effective, than traditional therapy sessions.
With telehealth, the therapist can still see the patient and assess them. They can also still communicate with and practice skills with the patient. At the heart of it, there isn’t that much of a difference between telehealth and other traditional therapeutic interventions we offer at Kita. Therefore, there is little to be worried about in terms of quality.
What Is Telehealth?
Telehealth refers to the delivery of health services such as therapy using video conferencing platforms. Telehealth is frequently used by allied health practitioners to serve distant populations or when a client is unable to travel to the therapist’s clinic for whatever reason.
Additionally, telehealth can be used to reach a bigger market, including consumers from other states or foreign countries. This benefit means that clients are not restricted by geography and can get the quality of service they want regardless of where they live.
What Forms of Therapy Can I Use for Telehealth ?
Different therapeutic approaches have different requirements. So it makes sense that patients would be concerned whether the therapy they have been recommended is suitable for telehealth.
Most forms of therapy are suitable for telehealth. At Kita, the most common forms of therapy performed through telehealth are music and speech therapy.
When Is It Appropriate to Use Telehealth?
It all depends on the comfort and mobility of the patient. In the case of children, they may need to be accompanied by an adult to avoid them getting distracted. Here are some instances where telehealth is not just an option but a priority:
- Clients living in a place where music therapists are unavailable
- Clients who are too sick to travel to therapy clinics
- Clients who are overwhelmed by face-to-face sessions
- Clients who are travelling and unable to attend scheduled face-to-face sessions
However, telehealth may be unethical in cases where the therapist has ascertained that the client is at risk of life-threatening behaviour or is in an environment that does not allow them to speak freely. Telehealth may also be impractical for clients who have trouble concentrating or who still have a long way to go on their recovery journey. If you know such a case, you can book a car for hire or sign up for community therapy services.
